Background: In 2022, DiMaNN recognized that effective disaster management requires an inclusive approach, particularly for marginalized groups such as women, children, and people with disabilities. In response, they organized training on disaster governance with a focus on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI).

Objective: To equip local government officials, civil society leaders, and community members with the knowledge and tools to ensure inclusive disaster response and governance practices.

Activities:

  • A series of workshops were held across five provinces, with a focus on understanding the unique vulnerabilities of marginalized groups during disasters.
  • Practical sessions included training on how to integrate GESI principles into local disaster management plans.
  • Special emphasis was placed on involving women and people with disabilities in decision-making processes during disasters.

Outcome: The training programs were well-received, with over 300 local leaders participating. GESI principles have now been included in the disaster response plans of 12 municipalities.

Impact:

  • Women and marginalized groups now have a stronger voice in disaster governance.
  • The inclusion of GESI principles led to a more equitable distribution of humanitarian aid during the 2023 landslide response in western Nepal.
